When I move on to the next life I'd like to have a ten-gallon hat with a tinge of a wry smile on the way back... Come with me into the next life We'll bring along your little cat and we'll sit in the sun while she carries her friend rat all the way back... But while I wait for the next life I think I'll just sit and relax and watch the trains travel slowly down the tracks Toss my bag into my pickup Drive to the coast with the sand under my feet and the highway at my back At my back On the way back
2.
Drank some milk and ran down the stairs Rode my bicycle to buy some honey-ed ham Oiled my chain and re-examined what a fantasy that lives inside a man Broom in hand I sweep the porch On a date again I can't afford the roast Don't go back Don't be sad Ride your bicycle and go to bed a man Don't go back Don't be sad What a fantasy that lives inside a man
3.
I Was a Mime 03:10
I was a mime I signaled nowere Gold-leaf or -mine take me somewhere With the sewer alive and the milkman arrives and says "hi" Daylight I'm shavin' my beard And if I look right I can see more clear With the sewer alive When the milkman arrives When the mountain decides to fall
4.
I'm in town to stay this time A friendly feelin' A twinkle in my eye Calling up a friend I'd like to meet again I wait in slow motion to hear her voice Maybe I'll walk around awhile Go to the shops and maybe I'll buy a kite Go to the park but there's no wind to fly I wait in slow motion to see it fly Fly! Fly!
5.
On the bus A riverbank All I need to watch is the watch of my best friend Holding back with a locket And tomorrow there won't be a riverbend Close the latch Go to bed And in my dreams cross the county line again Oh, the county line again Oh, the county line Breathing pollen And the fallen star is a satellite Get on your feet, boy and be calm while you apologize When I sleep well in my dreams we'll cross the county line again Oh, the county line again Oh, the county line...again
6.
A lake, a boat A folded note Oh, the people around me are careful not to see me smile In the evening I'll watch for the thistle as I walk back to the car Ooooo, la! Ooooo, la! "Come back to me I'd like to see you make your way back, but be careful You mean a lot to me" I'll drive through the night and be careful watching the stars through the windows hoping to see you in the moonlight by midnight
7.
Walk downstairs There's somethin' there on the table but I don't stare cuz I'm tryin' to be careful with my cares so I walk past but it chases me outta the house So I walk to the store and buy some beer so that I can forget for awhile That lasts a night I'll get up when I'm able to decide what I'd like to decide Then I remember there's somethin' there on the table Should I walk down the stairs and look or should I go to the store and buy some beer so that I can forget what's there on the table?
8.
At the Dance 02:36
When I see the hall I swivel my head and see the gilded walls and paintings and heads of all the animals I walk to the windows and watch as the rain falls As people come to call I move to the food and marvel at it all A pastry or ten I sit and watch as all the couples begin to dance in the hall Meanwhile rain continues to fall outside A nice memory of life
9.
Hey, look at me I'm at the seaside I'm doin' some journaling in the sun At the seaside writing about a dream in the breeze Oh, walk next to me at the seaside Oh, walk next to me in my dream I move back as the tide begins to approach me in my dream I turn to the right and see the seaweed and lightning Oh, walk next to me at the seaside Oh, walk next to me in my dream Oh, walk next to me at the seaside Oh, walk next to me comforting
10.
I pose a riddle: it's my recital and I'm a little lost Please help me find my way backstage to the exit door so I can go outside and breath and know that it's spring I'll come back through the entrance Pretend I'm one of the audience while we watch some dancers and some light comedy (ha, ha, ha) I think they forgot me so I think I'll leave because it's spring
11.
It's So Cold 03:06
I emerged from the cave I sat awhile and looked at the scenery The sun set in due time I was bound to get cold and retreat Smoldering Get the fire a-blazing It felt so safe but lately, I'm starting to get ruffled I'll emerge from the cave when I think I'm over my troubles Smoldering Get the fire a-blazing Oh, it's so cold get the fire a-blazing Oh, it's so cold inside here Oh, it's so cold outside here Oh, it's so cold the fire's smoldering
12.
Off to where? Often I mean well I scratched my lens Maybe I don't see well But I know or think I know what's good for me Now I'm where I need to leave well Alone again Perhaps one of my friends will know somethin' I don't know that might help me Or I'll go and live in the country
13.
Got the same machine On the radio waves On my way the meaning was late to arrive Cold and serene I'd rather go home On the lake, in the trees In the sun, in the breeze One day to know Got the same machine On the radio waves On my way the gleaming thought of where I will live Cold and serene I'd rather go home
14.
The Mountain 03:39
There were several ways to try I tried a mountainside Completely outta line with other things I've tried And though I failed to reach the top it was cool in the shade on the way down the clouds had parted All that's left was a mountain departed There were several ways to sigh I tried them all And when I walked into my room I had nothing left to give And though I failed to reach the top it was cool in the shade on the way down the clouds had parted All that's left was a mountain departed And I hope now I can sleep well I'm tired All that's left was a mountain departed
15.
Felt around for the key on the ground but it was dark so I found a place to sleep Oh, the only sound came to me from underground and caused the trees to dance right there in front of me Something loud woke me up from a dream Was it man or machine that caused my sigh to be The only sound it came to me from underground patiently It wore a gown and caused the trees to dance right there in front of me Oh, to dance right there in front of me Oh, to dance right there
16.
Take a chance A different route Walkin' home and thinking things to figure out Through the park Beneath the crows Past the flowers covered with unseasonable snow Take a chance on me Take a chance and see all the neighborhood sights, yeah! Walk with me Make a wish Sip some tea Lookin' out the window lost in memory Read a book or two or three Go to bed at 8:30 Take a chance on me Take a chance and see all the household sights, yeah! Walk with me Hand in hand to the post office Hand in hand to the grocery store Take a chance on me
17.
Another day begins I look outside Oh, how blue the sky appears to my eyes Even though the wind is not my preference I will take it happily knowing that my life can give me joy Not a cloud in sight The sun pourin' through my window Tryin' to walk the line between horror and the simple things in life that I adore I will take them happily knowing that my life can give me joy Oh, I will take them happily knowing that my life can give me joy It's another day! Another day
18.
The Treasure 02:14
Over the last ridge The fields and the ditch We stopped at the edge of town and found the spot on the ground and smiled Shoveling the dirt We found the box in the earth We paused before we opened up the treasure he had written of Oh, the treasure he had written of long ago
19.
Got a hankerin' for summer Lookin' forward to a gentle breeze I'm out the door! No time to snore! Gonna ride my bike around the neighborhood Got such a hankerin' for summer To see all the leaves on the trees I'm out the door! No time to snore! Gonna ride my bike around the neighborhood I'm out the door! No time to snore! I'm gonna ride my bike around the neighborhood
20.
A New Vibe 02:26
What to say? I feel kinda slow today Hopin' to activate a new vibe Go downstairs Make some lunch and then talk with some friends It's alright Wanna take a nap and dream Wanna see a mountain stream What did I say? There's still lots to do today Hopin' to activate a new vibe Stay upstairs Tally my worries and cares Be the one who says "It's alright" Wanna take a nap and dream Wanna see a mountain stream Wanna stand before the ocean Wanna name all the stars I see
21.
Pulled the shirt out of the ground A clue to where he might be found It's a long walk to the edge of the world We took a break and had some tea knowing he would've liked that scene Then we walked on toward the edge of the world With the sun setting we decided to leave and look again in the morning Old life! Calming sea! Calling out to the morning Holding what he'd been holding Looking over the edge of the world
22.
I could breathe so calmly I could see from a bird's eye view all the city streets and where rivers meet and knew that I was fine I could rest on the ocean I could see from a bird's eye view all the memories of places sweet and knew that I was fine Alright
23.
In Time 03:15
In time I will move on I'll find a way to live with comfort and love as my lens I'll be at home in the end In time as I live with the earth as my friend I'll love the beginnings I know I'll see with hope to make it to the end
24.
Go back and read some of your favorite things The moon is done waning You should go but not without me Go back and see all of your favorite things The sun's a-winking You should go but not without me Oh, you should go but not without me Oh, you should go but not without me
25.
Playing chess with the cat Roll up the welcome mat Starin' out the window like an old man as the rain clouds roll I can see beyond them some blue sky The ennui ain't that bad Havin' talks with my dad On our way to the day when we don't need the lab As the rain clouds roll I can see beyond them some more rain clouds rollin' but beyond them some blue sky Oh, some blue sky
26.
Whole valleys and rolling hills with hens Cows grazing while rivers round their bends I will meet them in nightmares or maybe not I'm a lever I'm a sieve I can't believe we're on the ridge I fell asleep there on the edge Well, fine Whole daisies and roses in their beds Cows grazing and rolling 'round again I will meet them in nightmares or maybe not I'm a lever I'm a sieve I can't believe we're on the ridge I fell asleep there on the edge well, I'm a dreamer I'm a hen I can't receive our joyful friends I fell asleep there on the ridge Well, fine Fine
27.
Comforting Override the wait Offering to compensate Patiently In the sky there's rest Billowing It's a calm duress like a wing of mist settling on grass
28.
Walkin' away from the center I turned around The lovely manners I'd found Kickin' the dust as I stood there The sun was out The lovely manners I thought I'd found Before too long I'll keep walkin' and hear the sound of lovely manners we've found The forest gets thick and the day grows cold as the sun goes down The lovely manners we'd found On my way over land until I get to a place of rest
29.
I'm there on the double I may seem alright If I'm lookin' for trouble you know somethin' ain't right I like all your riddles I like all your songs but, babe, I'm havin' trouble singin' along I like when I fall I like when I'm wrong I like when I'm subtle but I know somethin' is wrong when, babe, I'm havin' trouble singin' along So let's keep it simple Let's have a night out I've written some muddled poems I'll recite I like all your riddles I like all your songs I like all of your troubles but, babe, I know somethin' is wrong when I'm actin' subtle I just can't quite do it alone but, babe, I'm havin' trouble singin' along
30.
Flooding my life with rain from other worlds and good friends I'll write Comfort me I'm made for other worlds Help me do right I'll just stay inside Warming me Oh, rain without a fire and cold, pretty scenes Watching my life like rain from other worlds and trying to write a letter of light
31.
Go back and read the cover of your autobiography All that you'll see is the title and your name and a pretty picture of a lake and a cabin in the trees But put the book down and go outside with me! Even though it's raining we'll walk down a sunny lane Look if you must at the title page and the copyright and tell me the year that you finished and got it all right Is there a pretty picture of a lake and a cabin in the trees? Put the book down and go outside with me! Even though it's raining we'll walk down a sunny lane Know that there's more to gain Go outside with me!
32.
In Rhymes 01:57
Overlooking railroad tracks All the meaning calls me back inside a world of love and rhymes And the meaning of a sight Despite my leanings I try to keep it light inside this world of love It can't be re-done I reach for the sight and write in rhymes
33.
Goin' back Headin' home Lookin' forward to the lonely dance I know I am free to walk alone knowing there's a song for me when I get home Looking back from the sea knowing there are friends for me to greet and rain that's sweet They wait down the road I need 'Cause when I move on to the next life I'd like to have a ten-gallon hat and dance another number while I think back

about

One day I picked up my guitar and started to play. I hadn’t played for awhile, and soon found myself writing songs. I realized that it was the first of the month, so I decided to challenge myself to write and record at least one song every day for a month (the “at least” was due to the fact that I’d already written two songs that first day). I didn’t allow myself to think ahead to the next day by writing or sketching anything out in advance—each song had to be totally composed on that one day (with one song being an exception). On either the day I recorded the song, or the day after, I released it here on Bandcamp (I had varying internet access, so I think the first half of the album was day after, second half day of). After a few days that first week (having waited to make sure I felt I could actually meet the challenge), I announced the project to friends and family so they could see the album develop as it happened. About halfway through the month, the world shut down due to the covid pandemic.

I only wrote two songs a day on that first day, as well as on March 8. Later in the month, after having completed one song, I was taking a break before starting another one, when I got word that my dad had covid. I spent the bulk of the afternoon researching the steps he’d need to take in order to get medical care. He recovered after a few days—I no longer tried to record two songs in a day.
