Hello Jack 05:52

about

“Six Things to a Red Bicycle” was submitted to The Residents’ "I AM A RESIDENT!" project in the fall of 2017, where The Residents asked fans to submit cover versions of their songs to be considered for a new album. The song appeared on disc two of the special edition of the album, which was released in August 2018. For more information about the project visit residents.com/historical/?page=iamaresident.

The announcement of the project came as I was working on my album “Fall”, which I then largely paused for a month or two in order to work on a song. I knew early on that I wanted to create a mash up, à la The Residents themselves, of two songs, my first attempt being “Hello Skinny” (the 13th Anniversary Show version) and “Jello Jack”, which I entitled “Hello Jack” (and which appears here as the B-Side). I completed the music for this song, but could never get the vocals to work well enough to want to submit it, though I am very happy with it as an instrumental. So I tried another song: a mash up of “Six Thing to a Cycle” and “Red Rider”, and submitted it to The Residents. The version that appears here is my original submission, not The Residents’ re-master for the album.

The Residents’ original concept for the album was, after the submission period ended, to have their fans vote for which songs they wanted to see on a compilation album. The Residents were so positively overwhelmed by the amount and quality of songs, that they decided to use almost all of them in order to create a new album where they would create new compositions using the submissions as source material. This became the album, "I AM A RESIDENT!”. In addition to this, they would release a single of the top two vote getting songs. The Residents chose 50 submissions for us to choose from, mine, happily, being one of them. I didn’t expect my song to win a spot on the single (it didn’t), but was honored that The Residents had chosen it as one of the options.

When I received The Residents new album based on the submissions, I was giddy upon seeing my name listed on the back cover. I was dumbfounded then, when, after listening to the album, I hadn’t heard any pieces of my submission. But the album was awesome, I was humbled, and thought that perhaps my name had mistakenly been printed. I was grateful for having been part of the project—it was, and still feels like, a dream come true.

About a month after hearing the album I saw that The Residents were planning to release a two-disc version of the album as well. I was curious about what would be on the second disc: sure enough, it was a disc of 24 songs that The Residents had chosen to include in their entirety. My song was track nine. It was quite an honor.

The album cover I chose for the song here on Bandcamp is from an animated gif that The Residents made for each participant. We would upload a picture of ourselves into a gif maker they provided: an animated eyeball with top hat would cover our face (or whatever it might be), then be lifted to reveal who we were, with text proclaiming: “My name is Skull in the Crow’s Eye, and I am a Resident!” before the eyeball descended over us again.
